Cristiano Ronaldo was left frustrated and pained as his dream came to an end at the FIFA World Cup 2018 but the Portugal and Real Madrid superstar still managed to win hearts in a tense match against Uruguay in the round of 16 at Sochi’s Fisht Stadium on Saturday.
Cavani scored twice – in the seventh minute and 62nd minute – to earn Uruguay a place in the quarter-final berth against France, who earlier overcame 2014 runners-up Argentina 4-3 in a goal-fest. Edinson Cavani, the 31-year-old Paris Saint-Germain striker spread fear in the Portuguese area – he and Luis Suarez combined brilliantly to put fear deep into the hearts of the opposition defenders.
Ronaldo, meanwhile, was marked superbly by Uruguayan defenders, who gave nothing away. However, in a heart-warming gesture, Ronaldo came forward to help Cavani walk off the field after he picked up an injury in the 74th minute. By then, Portugal were trailing 1-2 and the World Cup dream was quickly slipping away.
