Young Man Set Himself On Fire Due To Hardship In Lagos

A man believed to be in his early 20s on Wednesday afternoon, set himself ablaze in the Omole Phase 1 area of Ojodu, Lagos.

The man, whose identity has not be confirmed, armed himself with a gallon of petrol and lighter and started narrating how Nigerians were going through hardship.

A witness, Ben Chinedu, told Daily Sun that: “I was (passing at the) Gate when I saw a crowd and I stopped to make enquiries. I saw a young man in his 20s; he was armed with a gallon of fuel.

He was shouting on top of his voice, saying that he was tired of life. He narrated how he had been running from one person to other for assistance and everyone was saying things were difficult. He told people who cared to listen that the country was under a spell that cannot be cleansed.

“He said there was no hope and future for the youth, he could no longer bear the ‘suffering-and-smiling’ syndrome and pretence showed by most people. He threatened to kill himself, but people thought he was making empty threats. 

He poured the liquid on his body and brought out a lighter. He ignited fire on his body and he was burning. We started pouring water on him, but the fire had done enough damage before we put it out. We called the police who came to the scene and picked the man who was unconscious by then. We don’t know the man and where he came from.”

Police public relations officer, CSP Chike Oti, who confirmed the story, said the man was being treated at the Lagos State Emergency Centre, 7-Up area.

Oti said: “Divisional Police Officer, Ojodu, received a distress call that a man set himself ablaze and raced to the scene with some officers. When the police arrived, they put out the fire and rushed the man to the Lagos State Emergency Centre, where he is being treated. 

The man is still unconscious as he received third-degree burns. He is still unconscious as I am talking to you. The Commissioner of Police directed the DPO in charge of Ojodu to take the man who attempted suicide to the hospital.

“It is a suicide attempt as people saw him set himself ablaze. It was not the usual jungle justice by a mob.

“He was the person who planned how to kill himself. The CP has ordered the DPO to investigate and find out who the man is and why he decided to take his life in a most agonising manner. We also call on members of the public who are looking for their missing relations to contact the Ojodu Police Station or the PPRO’s office to ascertain who the man is.”

President Buhari Orders Agencies To Publish Names Of Looters

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abukabar Malami, has disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari has directed all relevant agencies to compile names of all looters with a view to promptly enforcing the judgment of a Federal High Court in Lagos ordering the government to release information about the names of high ranking public officials from whom public funds were recovered.

The court also ordered the government to tell Nigerians the circumstances under which funds were recovered, as well as the exact amount of funds recovered from each public official.

Mr. Malami made the disclosure on Wednesday during a meeting at his office in Abuja with a delegation from Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP. This development was disclosed on Thursday in a statement by SERAP executive director Adetokunbo Mumuni.

According to Mr. Mumuni, “Mr Malami informed us that President Buhari has directed the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Finance, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC and other relevant agencies involved in the recovery of looted funds to promptly put the documents together with a view to fully and promptly enforcing the judgment by Justice Shagari.

Senator Isah Misau was on Thursday arraigned before a High Court in the FCT, for making “injurious falsehood” against the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris and the Nigerian Police Force.

The senator, who was arraigned on a 5-count charge, pleaded not guilty before Justice Ishaq Bello, the Chief Judge, and was granted bail to the tune of N5million with two sureties in like sum.

It was gathered that after the charges were read to him, the Senator moved an application through his counsel, Godwin Obla (SAN), to be granted bail on self-recognizance.

He told the court that he would be available to defend allegations made against him. In addition, Misua told the court that he appeared before the court voluntarily to face the charges.

The Director of Public Prosecution, Salihu Bakun who represented FG, said he was not opposed to the bail request. Justice Bello granted the bail application, even as he fixed November 28 for trial.

Nurse Caught Conducting Surgery on Patient in Oyo Hospital

A nurse has been caught in the act performing surgery on a patient in an Oyo State hospital, an act that has brought about some serious consequences.

The Oyo state’s Task Force on Private Health Facilities, on Wednesday, closed a hospital in Iseyin after the nurse was found on duty carrying out surgery on a patient.

This is coming after the state government resolved to sanitise the private health sector.

According to Tribune, the task force, which got to the Agbejemate Hospital and Maternity Centre in Iseyin at about 1:00p.m, met the male nurse in theatre carrying out a hernia surgery on a patient.

The nurse, who is also the owner of the hospital, is a retired theatre nurse. He was subsequently served a notice to report at the Oyo State Ministry of Health.

Chairman of the task force, Dr Ayoola, who said visitations had also been made to hospitals in Ibadan and Oyo town, declared that the ministry daily received reports on medical negligence and deaths arising from unqualified medical practitioners in the state.

Evans The Self Confessed Kidnap Kingpin Changes Guilty Plea To NOT GUILTY

The billionaire kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike (popularly known as Evans), has changed his guilty plea to two counts of conspiracy and kidnapping to “not guilty.”

Appearing before Justice Hakeem Oshodi of the Ikeja Division of the Lagos State High Court on Thursday, Evans pleaded not guilty to the charges of conspiracy to commit felony to wit kidnapping under Section 411 of the Lagos State Criminal Laws and also to kidnapping.

Both offences were said to have been committed on the 14th February, 2017.

Evans had earlier pleaded guilty to the two counts at his last court appearance two months ago.
